Michael Sofis, Ph.D.

Director of Behavioral Science - Innovation
Michael Sofis, Ph.D., is a director of behavioral science - innovation at Advocates for Human Potential’s (AHP’s) Center for Research and Evaluation. Dr. Sofis is a behavioral psychologist who has authored 23 peer-reviewed, scientific publications. He completed a National Institute on Drug Abuse postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health at Dartmouth College, which focused on better understanding and effectively targeting maladaptive decision-making and cognitive biases associated with cannabis misuse. Dr. Sofis has published nine peer-reviewed, scientific publications related to cannabis use. His research on cannabis is focused on testing the impact of his personalized digital intervention on reductions in cannabis use and on identifying patterns of cannabis use that are safe and those that are harmful. He has established expertise in using and developing decision-making tasks and leveraging innovative methods such as psychologically relevant linguistic analysis to understand maladaptive decision-making processes and problematic behaviors such as criminal acts of violence.  
 
 
As an early career investigator, Dr. Sofis served as co-principal investigator (PI) and PI on two pilot grants focused on biased decision-making with brief, digital interventions that reinforce the use of future-oriented language to improve health outcomes. He has received three early career investigator awards from the National Institutes of Health, and his research on maladaptive decision-making has been highlighted by more than 10 news organizations, including the New York Times. Dr. Sofis received his Ph.D. in behavioral psychology and his B.A. in applied behavioral science with a specialty in performance management from the University of Kansas.
