EVIDENCE-BASED RESOURCE KITS Evidence-Based and Promising Practices Implementation Resource Kits The President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health called for the advancement of evidence-based and promising practices (EBPPs), setting the following goal: “In a transformed mental health system, excellent mental health care is delivered and research is accelerated.” The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) has contracted with Abt Associates, Inc., and AHP to produce two of the agency’s EBPP implementation resource kits, covering: (1) supported housing and (2) consumer-operated mental health services. The main purpose of the kits is to shorten the time it takes for knowledge about effective treatments to be translated to practice by providing accessible tools, information, and technical expertise. The resource kits will provide users with in-depth information about the practice and offer practical tools that can be used by people seeking to replicate the practice. Each kit will be based on a comprehensive review of research and practice guidelines and reflect the consensus of experts in the field. Designed to identify practical issues that affect implementation, the kits will offer resources that can be used by specific audiences, including mental health authorities, program directors, practitioners, consumers, and families and other supporters. For each kit, AHP is assembling a panel of nationally recognized experts to gather recommendations; preparing a literature review of relevant research and implementation manuals; developing practical implementation resources such as brochures, assessment tools, and sample job descriptions; distributing the draft kit for feedback; and presenting the final product to SAMHSA/CMHS, other federal officials, state mental health authorities, and other stakeholders.
