REPORT TO CONGRESS ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Report to Congress on Violence Against Women
AHP worked with the Muskie School of Public Service to draft a Report to Congress summarizing and analyzing the data collected from ten discretionary grant programs run by the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). The report presented the grant data in the context of OVW strategies to stop violence against women, provided a historical and current analysis of the challenges faced by OVW, and assessed OVW grant programs’ effectiveness. AHP reviewed and summarized all pertinent research on effective responses to domestic violence and sexual assault. Research topics included arrest, prosecution, and supervision of perpetrators, as well as victim advocacy, and legal and social service programs. AHP also researched the prevalence of domestic and sexual violence for women across the country, and in the following special populations: Indians and Alaskan Native women, women with disabilities, women on campuses, women in rural areas, and older women. Finally, AHP analyzed the data collected from the ten grant programs, and presented the information in a readable report that conveyed “the story” implicit in the data.
