COMMUNITY INTEGRATION FOR OLDER ADULTS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS

Community Integration for Older Adults with Mental Illness: Overcoming and Seizing Opportunities

This briefing paper, developed in 2004 in support of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s New Freedom Initiative, describes the characteristics and service needs of older adults with serious mental illnesses, barriers to community integration, prevention interventions, and successful program and system practices. The briefing paper also profiles several successful programs. Ultimately, the paper attempts to answer the basic question: How can we best keep older adults with mental illnesses in the community?
