National Cannabis Summit Program Focuses on Real World Experience with Marijuana Legalization

The National Cannabis Summit, to be held in Denver, August 28-30, 2017, offers a program packed with speakers and workshops that reflect the realities of legalizing marijuana. Keynote speakers include current and former public officials responsible for implementation of medical and adult marijuana laws in states like Colorado and Washington. Workshops focus on lessons learned across public health, prevention, regulation, and more, emphasizing data-driven decision-making and evolving best practice. Presenters span academic, research, government, regulatory, community, and policy arenas. For the list of keynote speakers, visit: https://www.nationalcannabissummit.org/speakers/

“We designed the program to include real world examples from early adoption of marijuana legalization,” said Beth A. Rutkowski, MPH, Associate Director of Training and Epidemiologist at UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs and Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center, one of the organizations hosting the Summit. “The Summit will offer a chance for attendees to hear successes and challenges firsthand from those who have experienced it. Attendees will benefit from lessons learned and walk away with a tool box of emerging best practices.”

The Summit focuses on six key themes: the science of cannabis; emerging research and epidemiological data on the impact of legalization; public health and public safety; prevention; governance, federal law and emerging policy best practices; and regulatory issues. Workshop leaders will offer insight into everything from cannabis use disorder among older adults and the impact of medical marijuana dispensaries to youth prevention and implications of legalized marijuana for drugged driving. Grounded in balanced and objective perspectives, the conference has no ties to industry, and focuses on science-based policy and best practices. “As more and more states approve legislation and referendums, there is a need for a neutral forum in which stakeholders can engage with the very real, very practical questions of marijuana legalization,” said Neal Shifman, President and CEO for Advocates for Human Potential, Inc., also a conference host organization. “The National Cannabis Summit aims to put data and experience front and center, invite dialogue, and provide vital information to those on the forefront of implementation.”

The 2017 National Cannabis Summit is being hosted by Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. (AHP), National Council for Behavioral Health, and the Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network (ATTC). For more information, please visit www.NationalCannabisSummit.org
