California Awards $23 million to Support Behavioral Healthcare Workforce

The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) today awarded more than $23 million in funding to 81 nonprofit, tribal, and county-operated behavioral health providers to expand the state’s behavioral health care workforce.

Each entity will receive up to $350,000 to enhance and build its behavioral health substance use disorder (SUD) workforce, focusing on resources to expand the prevention, treatment, and recovery workforce for those who work with individuals with or at risk of developing an opioid use disorder.

Major Findings from Survey of California Behavioral Health Workforce Released

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) today released major findings and recommendations from a large-scale effort to collect data about the California behavioral health workforce. Reports can be used by organizations and leaders to help expand, elevate, enhance and empower behavioral health workforce in every California community. The assessment is part of DHCS’ Behavioral Health Workforce Development funding that supports two peer organization grant programs, as well as a behavioral health services internship program, which are administered by Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. Growing Demand for Cannabis Legalization Across North America Expands Scope of National Summit

Registration now open for 2019 North American Cannabis Summit
Thirty states now have some combination of decriminalization, medical use, and recreational use of marijuana, with several more states likely to put the issue to vote this year. In Canada, support from approximately two-thirds of the population prompted the introduction of Bill C-45 to legalize cannabis nationwide. On June 7, the Canadian Senate voted in favor of the legislation, adding amendments for the House of Commons to consider. In Mexico, possession of up to five grams of marijuana for “personal use” was decriminalized nearly a decade ago. More recently, in both 2015 and 2018, its Supreme Court ruled in favor of plaintiffs seeking to grow, transport, and use cannabis for personal reasons.

Access to Recovery (ATR) Success Celebrated at Community Event in Boston

AHP organized an event in Boston on March 20, 2018, to celebrate the success of the Access to Recovery (ATR) program, honoring both those who benefit from the program and those who fund and run it. ATR changes lives for the better by providing recovery supports like vouchers for basic services and a unique job training program.
