Richard Landis, M.S.W.

Senior Director for Strategic Planning and Business Development


Richard Landis is a recognized leader in workforce development issues related to behavioral health care. He has more than 20 years of experience in program management, direct clinical practice, and human services research and evaluation, with particular expertise in substance abuse, mental health treatment, and HIV/AIDS. At AHP, he is also the Project Director of SAMHSA’s Behavioral Health Workforce Development Initiative.

Before joining AHP, Mr. Landis led several national knowledge dissemination, application, and adoption projects. He is frequently invited to speak and conduct workshops on behavior change and technology transfer. He has authored more than 27 articles and presentations in the fields of substance abuse, HIV, technology transfer, and workforce development. Mr. Landis is co-author of Report on the state of the Substance Abuse Workforce in 2002: Priorities and Possibilities. He also wrote substantial portions of The Change Book: A Blueprint for Technology Transfer.

Mr. Landis has served as Project Director for a U.S. State Department initiative that conducted local and cross-site evaluations of promising drug treatment and prevention practices throughout the world. He led the DC/Delaware Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), which provided technical assistance and training in the mid-Atlantic area. Mr. Landis was an integral member of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) task force on workforce issues. In addition, for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), he directed the development of the Drug and Alcohol Problem Assessment (DAPA), a screening instrument, and developed an online course on brief interventions for physicians.
