HOMELESS
FAMILIES INITIATIVE

The purpose of the Homeless Families Initiative, co-funded by the federal
Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and Center for Substance Abuse
Treatment (CSAT), is to describe the population of homeless women with
dependent children admitted to a family or domestic violence shelter
and to document interventions that will result in residential and psychiatric
stability. In Phase I, AHP conducted a study of the characteristics of
women with mental health or co-occurring disorders and their children
who use domestic violence and family shelters, as well as a process evaluation
of programs and services available to meet their needs. In Phase II,
AHP is using a non-experimental design to compare the experience of families
who do and do not receive the enhanced case management service known
as Family Critical Time Intervention (FCTI). AHP developed a manual for
FCTI and trained staff to implement the intervention.
