CRIMINAL JUSTICE

AHP supports initiatives that integrate individual rehabilitation and public safety for individuals with behavioral health care problems and histories of homelessness involved with the criminal justice system. For example:

• AHP has worked with the Government of Bermuda to develop a consensus-driven, rehabilitative approach to the non-violent criminal justice client. The Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) project changed the criminal code; developed programs for rehabilitation, employment, and community service; and established methods of assessment, case management, pre-release, referral, and monitoring.

• AHP organized and moderated a national teleconference on diversion of people with mental illnesses from the criminal justice system.

• AHP has provided technical assistance to mental health and homeless services providers and to State Olmstead coordinators on interacting with criminal justice agencies.
