CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS

The Co-Occurring Disorders Team at AHP helps the federal government, states, and nonprofit organizations build effective systems of care for people with co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. Staff can:

  • Assess the political, social, legal, and economic environment to determine system readiness

  • Design and implement co-occurring disorders-related research and evaluation plans

  • Develop a detailed, incremental system development plan

  • Provide a full range of consultation and technical assistance (e.g., strategic planning)

  • Train system planners and providers in evidence-based approaches

  • Incorporate the guiding principles of “no wrong door” and “expectation, not exception” throughout system design and into all program operations

  • Analyze and make recommendations regarding relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines that may create barriers to effective systems change

  • Analyze and make recommendations about how to create or refine management information systems

  • Assess current funding streams and recommend changes to support systems integration
